Abstract Many small entrepreneurial firms in India have shown remarkable resilience in growth and innovative product development. This has been achieved despite stiff competition from MNCs operating in India, which have a bigger brand, better resources, and products that are widely perceived to be superior in quality and functionality. This study proposes that this has been possible because of the entrepreneurial drive in the company and the ability to be in close contact with customers and their felt and perceived needs. It is also expected that being local works to their advantage as they have an in-depth knowledge and a keen understanding of the market, customers, and environmental exigencies. The aim of this project is to identify such companies and pick up one to study in detail. Specific propositions will be developed to highlight learnings that are applicable to other local small firms. The study will also highlight the process through which this transition takes place, which will be very relevant for managers of such firms who are in the pursuit of growth and expansion from the local to the national level. Academically, it will add to the understanding of the entrepreneurial process, process of growth, and management of small enterprises.
