Abstract India’s urban population of 300 million represents 30 per cent of its population. Population growth in the country has been following the 2-3-4-5 syndrome: 2 per cent growth in the country, 3 per cent in urban cities, 4 per cent in mega cities, and 5 per cent slum population in mega cities. As a result, public amenities in urban cities are being stretched beyond limits. Ahmedabad city is the seventh largest in India with a population of 3.5 million, consisting of 2500 slums and chawls housing approximately 1.5 million people. Ahmedabad city has more than 100 government and 3500 private healthcare facilities. Yet, the health indicators are not very good. The objective is to build a model urban health centre with public-private participation so as to address the healthcare needs of the urban population.
