Abstract The objective of this project is to make the Rann of Kutch capable of producing food where the soil is absolutely unsuited for growing plants. The study proposes to try out the techniques of growing plants in soil-less media-hydroponics-to achieve the objective. The Rann of Kutch has high temperatures, hot winds, high levels of solar radiation, and no fresh water. It would therefore be necessary to generate power on-site using solar and/or wind-electric systems, desalinate water using that power, and create growing facility. If these efforts succeed, this vast territory can be turned into an asset. It may make the Rann also suitable for eco-tourism thereby making the territory economically productive. The experience gained here could be of value in similar regions elsewhere in the world.
