Abstract The study is confined to formal rural credit in India at macro level and the Rampura Phul block in Punjab at micro level. Selected branches of different categories of banks will be covered. The specific objectives of the study are to: • scan the rural financial environment in India to highlight its salient features • examine the performance of agricultural credit at macro level • study the performance of selected primary lending institutions and analyse economics of their lending operations • examine the performance of selected loans at farm level • point out policy and other changes needed to make the rural credit system more efficient and effective.
