Abstract 1. (a) To determine the quality of fruits and vegetables as perceived by select groups of consumers at retail outlets in Ahmedabad (b) To determine the quality consumers would desire (c) To determine the premium consumers would be willing to pay for improved quality of the produce Product Specifications – that is quality standards of each commodity – will be derived from the above findings. 2. To audit the existing supply chain, identify value-driving processes, etc. 3. To develop a small-scale (one ton per day) experimental supply chain for study and demonstration. Design of the new chain would be based on the findings of (1) and (2) above 4. To operate the system and carry out studies on economics, technological issues, operational and managerial issues, and consumer response to the produce 5. To use the new system as demonstration for relevant groups (growers, businessmen, and retailers) and explore possibilities of its adoption.
