Abstract Most schools in India use computers to teach programming languages, or application packages like word processor, spreadsheets, and presentation tools. Teachers of different subjects rarely use software for teaching and learning. Similarly, instances of usage of software for school management are also not very common. While several open source softwares (OSS) are available which can be used in schools without any cost, schools are not even aware of them. In this study, different facilitating and inhibitory factors affecting the use of various softwares have been identified. Computer teachers from schools in different parts of Gujarat were invited to a one-day workshop to make them aware of OSS available in the market. Further use of OSS in these schools was monitored for a specific period of time.
